The music group Die Antwoord self-recognizes as "zef" in style. In a 2010 meeting, Ninja of Die Antwoord reacted to the discussion emerging from his case that zef spoke to South Africa. Critics said it may rather simply speak to (Afrikaans) white South Africa. He remarked that "bigotry is to some degree out of date and a relic of days gone by for South Africans." In a similar meeting, Ninja portrays that zef is a style of music and a style of subculture, contrasting it with hip-jump in its job in the public arena. In a featurette for Die Antwoord's role in the film Chappie, Ninja expresses that zef signifies "that you actually couldn't care less what any other individual considers you; like, you speak to yourself in your music, by they way you dress, by they way you think, how you talk."
