Born 21 April 1955, Stompie Mavi made a seismic contribution to the popularity of Xhosa music in modern times. Unomnganga is an example of his genius to transform a Xhosa traditional classic into a universally beloved hit far beyond the confines of the language speakers.
Although the impact of paralysis (and being wheelchair bound) as a result of being stabbed in a robbery, he managed to assert and establish himself as one of the most important musicians of his era. So much so that his music and lyrics are still adored to date.
He died, 17 January 2008 after a long battle with low blood pressure resulting in multiple pneumonia attacks. The music industry was understandably shocked at the news of his passing. However, his music remains to tell a tale of a giant in South African folk music.
